William Mein Smith

William Mein Smith was the Surveyor General for the New Zealand Company at Port Nicholson from 1940 to 1843, and surveyed the town of Wellington, laying out the Town Belt and other features. Born in 1799, he served in the Royal Artillery in Canada, Gibraltar and at Woolwich before signing up to assist the Wakefields in 1839, sailing to New Zealand on the Cuba. He died in Greytown New Zealand in 1869 after establishing one of the earliest sheep runs in the Wairarapa with his friend Samuel Revans.
