Whiteville is a city located in Columbus County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,148. It is the county seat of Columbus County.

Geography

Whiteville is located at 34°19'48" North, 78°42'16" West (34.330096, -78.704533). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 5,148 people, 2,191 households, and 1,336 families residing in the city. The population density is 369.5/km² (957.5/mi²). There are 2,450 housing units at an average density of 175.8/km² (455.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 60.51% White, 36.67% African American, 0.64% Native American, 0.74% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.56% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.93% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,191 households out of which 27.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.1% are married couples living together, 20.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 39.0% are non-families. 36.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.22 and the average family size is 2.88. In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 7.8% from 18 to 24, 23.5% from 25 to 44, 24.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 77.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 72.9 males. The median income for a household in the city is $25,455, and the median income for a family is $34,128. Males have a median income of $35,074 versus $23,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,337. 26.9% of the population and 19.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.0% of those under the age of 18 and 33.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
