The Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) is one of four universities in Montreal, Quebec. The university is a branch of the Université du Québec, a public institution with branches in many Quebec cities. It was created on April 9, 1969 by the government of Quebec, through the merger of the École de Beaux-Arts de Montréal, the Collège Sainte-Marie, and a number of smaller schools. In 2004, UQAM had a student population of 42,257 in six faculties (arts; education; letters, language and communications; political science and law; science; and social science) and one school (management). It offers bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. It is one of Montreal's two French-language universities, along with the University of Montreal. Its campus is located in downtown Montreal, with most of its buildings in the Quartier Latin neighbourhood around Berri-UQAM metro station, to which it is connected via the underground city. The university also leases buildings or classrooms in several towns outside Montreal, offering programs or parts of programs to local students. The university is represented in Canadian Interuniversity Sport by the UQAM Citadins. It is currently under student occupation, and has been on strike for several weeks, in accordance with the general student strike in the province.
