United Soccer LeagueThe United Soccer League was a professional soccer league in the United States in the mid-1980s. This league should not be confused with the current United Soccer Leagues, the parent organization of minor league soccer in the United States. History After the demise of the second incarnation of the American Soccer League in 1983, four ASL teams found the USL. The original plan for the league was to avoid the problems that plagued both the ASL and the North American Soccer League. The USL was to feature primarily American players and fiscal responsibilty as well as orderly expansion. Initially, the league was to have both indoor and outdoor seasons so that clubs could play year round. The USL played its first season in 1984 with nine teams in three divisions. Fort Lauderdale won the league's first championship. However, before the league could play its indoor season, seven teams ceased operations, cancelling the indoor season. Four teams managed to begin the 1985 season. However, after the first half of the season was completed, creditors foreclosed on the league. League officials were locked out of their offices, and the USL never played another game. Teams - Buffalo Storm
