Olbers (Crater)

Olbers is a lunar crater that lies at the west edge of the Oceanus Procellarum, near the western limb of the Moon. It lies to the northwest of Hevelius crater, and to the north of the indistinct Hedin crater formation. Further to the south is the Riccioli crater. Due to its location, this crater appears very oblong because of foreshortening. It is viewed nearly from the edge, making observation of the interior difficult from the Earth. The rim of Olbers is somewhat worn, with notches to the north, east, and south. The interior floor is relatively flat, especially toward the eastern rim, and is not marked by notable craterlets. The floor is covered by ray material and ejecta from the adjacent Glushko crater.

Glushko crater

Attached to the western rim of Olbers is the young impact crater named Glushko. This crater possesses a relatively high albedo and is the focus of a prominent ray system that extends in all directions across the nearby surface. This crater was previously designated 'Olbers A' before being renamed by the IAU. It was named in honor of Valentin Petrovitch Glushko, a Soviet rocket scientist.

Satellite craters

By convention these features are identified on Lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater mid-point that is closest to Olbers crater.
