Historical info

The town was first mentioned in 791 AD and received official saction as a town in 1444 AD. Remaining from medieval times is its historic town district. The Urselbach is a creek running through the town, historically it was used for a large number of various mills, possibly because of the height difference in the town limits. During the Second World War, a transitory camp for allied POWs was established, especially for pilots who were questioned there. After the war this became Camp King of the US Army and was used to question Nazi criminals, among others by Robert Kempner. Later the camp was also connected to the CIA and German intelligence services. The camp was closed in 1993. On July 30, 1977, it was the place of the Red Army Faction terrorist attack on Jrgen Ponto, then head of Dresdner Bank.
