Milton Sirotta
Milton Sirotta
(born c. 1929) was the nephew of
American
mathematician
Edward Kasner
. He is known for coining the word
googol
in 1938 when he was nine years old. His uncle Edward asked him what name he would have given to a "1" followed by 100 zeros and "googol" was his answer. Kasner announced the concept in his book
Mathematics and the Imagination
. Sirotta is also credited with coining the word
googolplex
which is ten raised to the power of a
googol
. The Internet search engine
Google
was named as a play on the number googol.
