Miguel Corte-real

Miguel Corte-Real was a Portuguese explorer. He was the son of Joo Vaz Corte-Real and the brother of Gaspar Corte-Real. Gaspar disappeared near Newfoundland in 1501. Miguel set out an expedition to search for him, but he disappeared as well. Some scholars believe he made inscriptions on the Dighton Rock. They discerned the Portuguese Coat of Arms, a Portuguese cross, and the Latin text: MIGUEL CORTEREAL voluntate DEI hic DUX INDiorum 1511 In English: Miguel Corte Real by the grace of God (was) here leader of the Indians 1511 Corte-Real, Miguel Corte-Real, Miguel
