Professor Herold independently conducted research into estimating the numbers of
civilians killed
in
Afghanistan
by the
United States
, in the Afghan campaign of its
war on terror
. In his report, released in early
2002
, Herold estimated the total number of civilian deaths at over 3700, at the average rate of 62 civilians per day, since the war began on October 7, 2001.
