- A lyric poem is one that expresses a subjective, personal point of view. It is usually rather light and fanciful often following a set pattern. The word is rooted in the word lyre, the implication being that the lyric poem is suitable for singing with a lyre, although the modern use of the expression "lyric poetry" is separate from the term "lyrics", which are, indeed, the words set to music.
