Lawndale is a town located in Cleveland County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 642.

Geography

Lawndale is located at 35°24'54" North, 81°33'44" West (35.415039, -81.562250). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²). 2.1 km² (0.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.81% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 642 people, 270 households, and 180 families residing in the town. The population density is 306.0/km² (791.6/mi²). There are 300 housing units at an average density of 143.0/km² (369.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 74.45% White, 22.27% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.62% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 2.34% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 2.80% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 270 households out of which 24.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.4% are married couples living together, 11.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 18.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.92. In the town the population is spread out with 21.8% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 25.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $30,250, and the median income for a family is $36,023. Males have a median income of $26,484 versus $19,792 for females. The per capita income for the town is $13,002. 19.6% of the population and 14.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
