I Am My Own Wife

I Am My Own Wife is a play by Doug Wright which examines the life of Charlotte von Mahlsdorf, born Lothar Berfelde, a German transvestite who killed her father, and survived the Nazi and Communist regimes in East Berlin. It is based on von Mahlsdorf's autobiography, I Am My Own Woman: The Outlaw Life of Charlotte Von Mahlsdorf, Berlin's Most Distinguished Transvestite. The one-man play opened on Broadway in 2003 starring Jefferson Mays in some forty roles. It won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Play and the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
