Geography Hayesville is located at 35°2'48" North, 83°49'4" West (35.046630, -83.817883). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. Demographics As of the census of 2000, there are 297 people, 147 households, and 80 families residing in the town. The population density is 260.6/km² (668.2/mi²). There are 171 housing units at an average density of 150.1/km² (384.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.33% White, 0.34% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 1.35% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 147 households out of which 21.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% are married couples living together, 12.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 44.9% are non-families. 42.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.99 and the average family size is 2.73. In the town the population is spread out with 20.5% under the age of 18, 8.1% from 18 to 24, 23.6% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 24.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 85.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.4 males. The median income for a household in the town is $20,000, and the median income for a family is $30,938. Males have a median income of $21,667 versus $16,500 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,281. 14.7% of the population and 7.7% of families are below the poverty line.
