Happoushu

Happoushu (発泡酒) is a Japanese low-malt beer. Under Japanese law, only beers with at least a certain minimum content of barley malt can be classified as "beer". Happoushu therefore falls into a different legal category, one that is taxed at a lower rate than beer. This makes it cheaper for the consumer, a key selling point (the taste is generally regarded as inferior to "real" beer).
