Hairspray

This article is about 'Hairspray', the musical that started performances on Broadway in 2002. For the 1988 movie, see Hairspray (movie). Hairspray is a Broadway musical based on the 1988 movie of the same name. It won eight Tony awards in 2003 including Best Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Marissa Jaret Winokur) and Best Actor in a Musical (Harvey Fierstein). The story, based on the movie Hairspray starring Ricki Lake, is of a girl named Tracy Turnblad (Winokur) whose dream is to dance on the Corny Collins Show. Late in 2003, Winokur was replaced with One Life to Live actress Kathy Brier in the role of Tracy Turnblad. In 2004, 19-year-old actress Carly Jibson replaced Brier in the role of Tracy Turnblad, while actor Michael McKean replaced Harvey Fierstein in the role of Tracy's mother, Edna Turnblad.
