Cherokee County, Alabama

Cherokee County, Alabama is a county of the State of Alabama. It is named for the Cherokee tribe of American Indians. As of 2000 the population was 23,988. Its county seat is Centre.

History

Cherokee County was established on January 9, 1836.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,554 km² (600 mi²). 1,433 km² (553 mi²) of it is land and 121 km² (47 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.81% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 23,988 people, 9,719 households, and 7,201 families residing in the county. The population density is 17/km² (43/mi²). There are 14,025 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.83% White, 5.54% Black or African American, 0.31% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.35% from other races, and 0.83% from two or more races. 0.85% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 9,719 households out of which 28.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.40% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.90% are non-families. 23.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.86. In the county the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 7.60% from 18 to 24, 27.60% from 25 to 44, 26.70% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.50 males. The median income for a household in the county is $30,874, and the median income for a family is $36,920. Males have a median income of $29,978 versus $20,958 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,543. 15.60% of the population and 11.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.40% of those under the age of 18 and 14.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
