Casar is a town located in Cleveland County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 308.

Geography

Casar is located at 35°30'52" North, 81°36'58" West (35.514486, -81.616007). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²). 4.5 km² (1.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 308 people, 132 households, and 93 families residing in the town. The population density is 68.0/km² (176.0/mi²). There are 145 housing units at an average density of 32.0/km² (82.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 99.35% White, 0.65% African American, 0.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 132 households out of which 25.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 27.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.81. In the town the population is spread out with 19.2% under the age of 18, 7.5% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.5 males. The median income for a household in the town is $26,875, and the median income for a family is $30,179. Males have a median income of $24,375 versus $16,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,486. 22.1% of the population and 18.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 31.4% of those under the age of 18 and 13.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
