Benjamin Hall, 1St Baron LlanoverBenjamin Hall, 1st Baron Llanover (1802-1867) was a civil engineer and politician. The son of industrialist, Benjamin Hall, he became MP for Monmouth in 1832 and held the seat for five years. He was instrumental in the passing of the Truck Act in 1831. He was created a baronet in 1838, and appointed Commissioner for Works in 1855. In this post, he ordered the casting of the bell nicknamed Big Ben (in his honour) in 1856. It now hangs in The Clock Tower of the Houses of Parliament in London. Through his wife, Lady Llanover, Hall inherited the Llanover estate in Monmouthshire, and in 1859 was created 1st Baron Llanover.
