Ashley is a city located in McIntosh County, North Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 882. It is the county seat of McIntosh County.

Geography

Ashley is located at 46°2'6" North, 99°22'25" West (46.034894, -99.373714). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 882 people, 436 households, and 258 families residing in the city. The population density is 540.5/km² (1,404.9/mi²). There are 528 housing units at an average density of 323.6/km² (841.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.41% White, 0.00% African American, 0.34% Native American, 0.91% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.34% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. The top 6 ancestry groups in the city are German (66.9%), Russian (15.1%), Norwegian (7.1%), United States (3.3%), English (2.3%), French (1.9%). There are 436 households out of which 12.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% are married couples living together, 3.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.8% are non-families. 39.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 25.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.90 and the average family size is 2.49. In the city the population is spread out with 12.0% under the age of 18, 4.2% from 18 to 24, 14.4% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 48.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 64 years. For every 100 females there are 82.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.0 males. The median income for a household in the city is $18,015, and the median income for a family is $28,500. Males have a median income of $17,292 versus $14,783 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,001. 18.9% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 9.3% of those under the age of 18 and 27.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
