Florida Atlantic University

Florida Atlantic University is a public state university, founded in 1961 in Boca Raton, Florida, USA. Their first four-year undergraduate program began in 1964, with 867 students. By 2004, enrollment had grown to over 26,000 students spread over seven campuses. FAU is currently the fastest growing school in Florida.

Departments

Departments at the Boca campus include the Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, The Dorothy F. Schmidt, Charles E. Schmidt College of Science, College of Arts & Letters, College of Engineering, College of Education, College of Business, and College Of Architecture, Urban and Public Affairs. The Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College opened at the John D. MacArthur Campus in 1999. FAU also runs the Seatech Institute for Ocean and Systems Engineering in Port St. Lucie. In 2004, The College of Science opened a medical school in conjunction with the University of Miami. Medical students spend the first two years of their education at the Boca Raton campus, transferring down the Miami for rotations and receiving their degree from UM. Boca Raton Community Hospital is considering a move to the campus as of 2004. Other degrees offered at the Graduate level include M.B.A, M.S., M.A., M. Ed., Ph.D. and others. FAU also runs continuing education programs, including audit options for seniors over 65 years of age.

Campuses

In addition to the original Boca Raton campus, there are campuses in the south Florida cities of Dania Beach, Davie, Fort Lauderdale, Jupiter, and Port St. Lucie. FAU's current president is former Florida Lt. Governor Frank T. Brogan.

Miscellaneous

In 2004 FAU sports were elevated to the NCAA Division I level, although students are funding athletic departments at Florida Atlantic University and at a rate that far exceeds the national average for Division I-A schools. http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-pfaubudget01apr01,0,4233802.story?coll=sfla-news-sfla The FAU campus was designated a burrowing owl sanctuary in 1971 by the Audubon Society. The owl prefers the campus because there are not many predators, other than cats, near an airport. The feisty bird, traditionally associated with wisdom and determination, serves as the University's mascot. In 2005, FAU unveiled 3 new logos in order to create a strong, unified brand identity along with a distinctive new look for the face that the university turns toward the public, a look that accurately reflects the pride FAU takes in being a center of outstanding scholarship, 21st century research and dedicated community service and a place where students make memories that last a lifetime. It is about keeping the best of tradition while embracing the future of FAU. In 2003, Carla Coleman, FAU's former chief fundraiser, was arrested for illegally funneling money through a nonprofit FAU foundation for a 2003 red Corvette; a 'gift' for then-retiring FAU president Anthony Catanese. Coleman gave $42,000 in school foundation money to a decorator working on the FAU presidential mansion. Boca Raton police said the decorator then wrote a check for that amount to Mrs. Catanese, who was paid as a "consultant" for what was expected to be volunteer work on the house. While police sought criminal charges against Mr. and Mrs. Catanese as well, only Coleman was charged. Mr. Catanese has since given back the Corvette.
